Jets Finalize Offensive Coaching Staff with Six Additions

After hiring offensive coordinator Frank Reich last week, the Jets finalized their offensive coaching staff with six additions — quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave, tight ends coach Alfredo Roberts, offensive assistant/assistant quarterbacks coach Thomas Merkle, assistant offensive line coach Al Netter, pass game coordinator Seth Ryan and offensive assistant Matthew Sargent.
Musgrave, 58, has 30 years of coaching experience on the pro and college levels. He most recently was the Browns’ quarterbacks coach in 2025 after spending two seasons in Cleveland as the senior offensive assistant. Musgrave has handled offensive coordinator duties for 11 seasons with six teams — the Denver Broncos (2017-18), Oakland Raiders (2015-16), Minnesota Vikings (2011-13), Jacksonville Jaguars (2003-04), Carolina Panthers (1999-2000) and Philadelphia Eagles (1998). During his time as offensive coordinator or quarterbacks coach, Musgrave helped three quarterbacks to Pro Bowl selections, including Derek Carr (2015-16), Matt Ryan (2010) and Steve Beuerlein (1999).
A fourth-round selection (No. 106 overall) of the Dallas Cowboys in the 1991 draft, Musgrave played six seasons in the NFL with the 49ers (1991-94) and the Broncos (1995-96) while appearing in 12 career games. He was the backup to Pro Football Hall of Fame QBs Joe Montana, Steve Young and John Elway. The Grand Junction, CO, native played collegiately at Oregon from 1987-90, setting 15 passing records.
Merkle was Stanford’s quarterback coach last season while Reich handled interim HC duties. Prior to his transition to QB coach, Merkle spent five seasons as a graduate assistant and quality control analyst for the Cardinal. He played QB at Kenyon College in Ohio where set 14 conference and school records and was named NCAC Rookie of the Year in 2016 and selected All-Conference in 2019. Merkle earned a Bachelor of Arts in History & German in 2020 from Kenyon and completed his Master’s Degree in Liberal Arts from Stanford.
Netter, 36, also is moving to the Jets from Stanford, where he coached the offensive line last season for Reich after spending the 2023 and 2024 seasons as the program’s co-offensive line coach. Prior his Cardinal arrival, Netter had a five-year run at Yale where he started as offensive line coach in 2018, was promoted to run game coordinator in 2020, and then finished his time as associate head coach and co-offensive coordinator. From 2015-17, Netter was an offensive graduate assistant coach at Michigan under Jim Harbaugh. An All-North Coast Section T at Cardinal Newman HS (Santa Rosa, CA) in 2006, Netter started 52 games at Northwestern. He was a two-time team captain (2009-10) and three-time All-Big Ten Honorable Mention (2009-11) with the Wildcats. Netter signed with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2012 and was on their roster during the 2012-13 seasons. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Northwestern in 2011 and his Master’s from Michigan in sports management in 2017.
Roberts, who has 22 years of coaching experience in the NFL, spent the past five seasons as the Pittsburgh Steelers tight ends coach. Prior to that, Roberts, 60, was on the Los Angeles Chargers staff for four seasons, handling tight ends (2020) and running backs (2017-19). Roberts began his NFL coaching career as the tight ends coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2003-06) and he also coached the tight ends for the Cleveland Browns (2007-08), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2009-11) and Indianapolis Colts (2012-15). A Ft. Lauderdale, FL, native, Roberts graduated from the University of Miami and was a tight end on two National Championship teams (1983 and ’87). An eighth-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs (No. 197 overall), Roberts played three seasons with the Chiefs (1988-90) and three with the Dallas Cowboys (1991-93), where he was a member of two Super Bowl winning teams.
The Jets will begin their third chapter of Ryan family member coaching with the hiring of Seth Ryan, 31, as their passing game coordinator. Ryan is the son of Rex Ryan, who became an NFL head coach for the first time from 2009-14, and the grandson of Buddy Ryan, who arrived on Weeb Ewbank’s coaching staff as first-time pro defensive line coach in 1968, in time to help the Jets’ Super Bowl season unfold and stayed on board through 1975. On top of that, Seth’s uncle Rob Ryan, Rex’s twin brother, worked as a Jets ballboy with Rex in the Sixties.
Seth Ryan recently finished his fifth season as a Detroit Lions assistant on HC Dan Campbell’s staff. From 2021-24 he was the Lions’ assistant wide receivers coach working under WR coach Antwaan Randle-El. During that period, Ryan was on the same coaching staff as Jets HC Aaron Glenn, who coordinated the Lions’ defense from ‘2021-24. Last season, he shifted to assistant tight ends coach.
Ryan began his NFL coaching career as a two-year offensive quality control coach (2019-20) for the Los Angeles Chargers. He attended Summit (NJ) HS before he went on to play wideout at Clemson and was a part of the Tigers’ team that beat Alabama, 35-31, for the National Championship following the 2016 college season.
Sargent, the new offensive assistant, was a graduate offensive assistant on Reich’s Stanford staff last season.
