West Ham United midfielder Tomas Soucek has broken a Premier League record previously held by a Liverpool legend as the Hammers continue their fight for survival.

West Ham are currently facing Manchester United, aiming to make it four wins in five league matches. They responded impressively to a late defeat against Chelsea by beating Burnley at the weekend, with first-half goals from Crysencio Summerville and Taty Castellanos sealing a 2–0 victory at Turf Moor.

With Nottingham Forest losing 3–1 to Leeds United on Friday, West Ham now sit just three points from safety and could draw level with Forest, who host bottom club Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday, if results fall their way.

However, Man United arrive in strong form, having enjoyed a resurgence under head coach Michael Carrick. United have won four consecutive Premier League matches, beating Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur.

Soucek has put West Ham ahead 1-0, becoming the highest-scoring Czech player in Premier League history by surpassing former Liverpool star Patrik Berger. Soucek has reached 39 goals, one more than Berger, who was a fan favourite during his seven-year spell at Anfield.

Berger, often deployed in a more advanced midfield role, impressed in England even before joining Liverpool, helping the Czech Republic reach the Euro 1996 final.

In his first season at Anfield, he scored nine goals in 34 appearances and continued to make key contributions, including a memorable hat-trick against Chelsea in 1997-98.

Under Gerard Houllier, Berger featured in 41 matches during the Frenchman’s first season, though injuries limited his role during the 2000-01 treble campaign.

He notably provided the long-range assist for Michael Owen’s FA Cup-winning goal, a moment still remembered by fans. In his final years at Liverpool, Berger’s involvement waned, making just four appearances in 2002-03 before moving on to Portsmouth.
