Algerian superstar Mahrez provided a brilliant touch to set up his Ivorian teammate to double the advantage for the visitors inside twenty minutes at the SHG Arena in Riyadh.

Despite the heroic efforts of Shabab star Yannick Carrasco, the hosts were overwhelmed by a powerful start from the title contenders. Rayan Hamed Hamidou opened the scoring for the Jeddah club in the 6th minute before Kessié made it 2-0 in the 20th minute.

Then former Manchester City playmaker Mahrez got on the scoresheet himself five minutes later when he got on the end of a cross from Zakaria Al Hawsawi to finish at the far post.

Carrasco pulled a goal back with a spectacular free kick shortly after but it only briefly interrupted the dominance. Enzo Millot added one more goal to make it 4-1 in favor of the visitors before halftime and there was no hope for an Al Shabab comeback despite Carrasco’s 44th minute penalty.

Saudi Pro League title race update

Ivan Toney converted his own penalty kick to complete the 5-2 victory. Al Ahli move level with leaders Al Hilal on 50 points but the Saudi top flight leaders appear likely to restore their three-point lead. Hilal currently lead visitors Al Ettifaq 2-0 close to halftime at the time of publication.

Thirteen rounds remain in a tight race for top honors that also includes Sadio Mané and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr, who can re-take second place if they win at Al Fateh on Saturday.

Mahrez now has 6 goals and 10 assists in 28 matches across all competitions this season. For Kessié, Friday’s finish was his first goal for his club since leaving to join Ivory Coast at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Shortly before the tournament in Morocco, Mahrez set up the Ivorian for a crucial equalizer in the King’s Cup quarterfinals before both players converted penalty kicks in a victory over Al Qadsiah.
