The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, together with the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Obenewaa Ocloo, has handed over a repaired bus to the Greater Accra Market Association, ending more than five years of inactivity.
Officials say the vehicle, which had been out of use for several years, is expected to support the association’s operations and improve mobility.
The bus was presented on Thursday during the association’s 65th End-of-Year Gathering and General Meeting in Accra. The event was attended by the Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, and other dignitaries.
Speaking at the handing-over ceremony, the Mayor said the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) would provide a driver for the bus and cover its monthly running costs. He added that the vehicle’s air-conditioning system had been repaired to make it fully serviceable for official duties.
The Mayor explained that returning the bus to service was a pledge he made following an interaction in December with the First Lady, Lordina Mahama, who drew his attention to the vehicle’s prolonged inactivity.
He linked the gesture to guidance from President John Mahama on avoiding promises that cannot be fulfilled, noting that the Assembly considers the intervention part of practical steps under the government’s reset agenda.
In her remarks, the Regional Minister said the presentation was made on behalf of the President and the First Lady. She encouraged the association to continue engaging the Assembly whenever additional support is needed.
Receiving the keys, the President of the Greater Accra Market Association, Madam Mercy Naa Afrowa Needjan, expressed appreciation to the President, the First Lady and the Mayor for fulfilling the pledge and restoring the bus to active service.
She said the vehicle had been parked at a workshop for over five years and noted that its return would significantly improve the association’s movement and activities across the metropolis.
