Crime 101 Box Office Sets One Of Chris Hemsworth’s Worst Debuts Despite Amazon Movie’s Huge Price Tag

Crime 101 is failing to break into the box office during its opening weekend.

The new crime movie, which stars Marvel Cinematic Universe alums Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, and Barry Keoghan opposite Halle Berry, is based on Don Winslow’s 2020 novella of the same name and reportedly cost $90 million to make. The novella was subject to a heated bidding war in 2023, which Amazon ultimately won. Crime 101 reviews have been solid, earning it a Certified Fresh 86% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Per Deadline, as of Saturday morning, Crime 101 is projected to earn a 3-day domestic debut of $11.8 million and a 4-day total of $13.8 million over the President’s Day holiday weekend. Either number sees the movie set to earn Chris Hemsworth’s fifth-worst wide release domestic debut of all time as well as his worst in eight years, since 2018’s Bad Times at the El Royale.

Below, see a breakdown of the worst wide release debuts for Chris Hemsworth movies compared to how much the movies earned overall:

Movies often need to earn back two and a half times their budgets in order to break even in theaters, which could place Crime 101‘s estimated break-even point somewhere around a whopping $225 million.

It seems unlikely to earn that much in theaters, considering the fact that the lowest domestic debut for a Chris Hemsworth movie that grossed more than $225 million worldwide was the $30 million earned by 2019’s Men In Black: International ($254.3 million worldwide).

However, theatrical revenue might not be the be-all and end-all for the Crime 101 movie. Because it’s an Amazon MGM Studios release in the United States and Canada, it is likely being viewed by the company primarily as a streaming title. Ultimately, its profitability will most likely be decided by its performance on Prime Video rather than its box office gross.

Additionally, it is possible that Crime 101 could have legs in theaters. It is performing reasonably well with the audiences that have seen it, earning a Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter score of 84% and a CinemaScore of B. While the weekend is being dominated by the debut of Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights, the romance movie is uniquely poised to take advantage of the Valentine’s Day holiday on Saturday.

Wuthering Heights and Crime 101‘s impending sophomore weekend is free of holiday associations and is also relatively clear of new major wide releases, so that quiet period (ahead of the release of the hotly anticipated Scream 7 on February 27) could help the new movie gain traction in theaters as audiences seek out titles that they haven’t already seen.
