Princess of Wales felt Harry walking away from royal life was ‘inevitable’

The Princess of Wales had less interest than Prince William in trying to stop the Duke and Duchess of Sussex from walking away from royal life, believing Prince Harry quitting his role was “inevitable”. Despite the Prince of Wales being intensely saddened at his younger brother’s decision to leave the royal family, the princess was less interested in attempting to persuade Harry and Meghan to stay, it can be revealed.

In the third part of our exclusive serialisation of the new tell-all biography William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, by The Mirror’s royal editor Russell Myers, we reveal how Kate bore witness to the deterioration of William and Harry’s relationship and later believed the Sussexes were “not to be trusted” in the wake of their controversial Oprah Winfrey interview.

Packed with intriguing insight into the biggest stories and events to follow the Prince and Princess of Wales in recent years, Myers tells how the princess believed Harry would want more than being a “bit-part player” in the monarchy amid his fundamental differences with her husband.

In further revelations, the future queen eventually realised she “could do no more to bring the brothers together” – despite previously being a “voice of reason” throughout the disintegration of their relationship.

The first joint biography in more than a decade also reveals how at first, Kate had been willing to give Harry’s wife Meghan a chance when she was first introduced to her.

But following Harry and Meghan’s wedding, she and William felt the Sussexes “had an agenda”, with their behaviour more than just being “difficult”.

The new revelatory biography, available to pre-order now, highlights the Prince and Princess of Wales’s life from their earliest meeting at St Andrews University to the current day and how they have shaped their vision for a modern monarchy and its safe continuation at a time of extreme change and turmoil.

In the first part of The Mirror’s exclusive serialisation, it was revealed how William demanded his disgraced uncle Andrew be immediately banished from the royal fold “before the rot set in”, following revelations of the former Duke of York’s close relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

The second part revealed how William was left in “a state of disbelief” before he and the Princess of Wales gathered their three children together to tell them that “mummy was ill, but that she was going to be okay” after she was diagnosed with cancer.

The new revelatory biography, available to pre-order now, also highlights the couple’s resilience and dedication in the face of adversity, from the relentless media scrutiny and controversies of their 2022 Caribbean tour, as well as the prince and princess’ reaction to the departure from royal life by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the forming of the ‘Cambridge way’ and the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

William and Catherine: The Intimate Inside Story, published on 26 February by Ebury, Penguin Random House, is available to pre-order now.
