Monday, February 16 is a federal holiday as the United States observes Presidents’ Day. Here’s what’s open and closed.

Most privately owned businesses are open today, with many major retailers and grocery stores keeping their regular hours.

Local, state, and federal government offices are closed in observance of the holiday.

Closures include the United States Post Office and it’s mailing services, city halls, common councils, and court houses. Banks and the stock market are also closed.

Trash and recycling services in many communities will be postponed and resume Tuesday, February 17. In Syracuse, they are operating on a normal schedule.

Presidents’ Day has been a federal holiday since 1879, originally beginning as a tribute to the United States’ President George Washington and his birthday which falls on February 22.

While legally recognized as “Washington’s Birthday” according to the U.S. Office of Personal Management, Presidents’ day has since expanded to pay tribute to all U.S. Presidents and is observed on the third Monday in February every year.
