Blustery Snowstorm Closes Schools, Businesses in St. John’s

(VOCM News)

Schools, government offices and some businesses are closed in the metro region as the eastern portion of the island takes in what could be as much as 60 cm of snow.

Some 25-30 cm has already fallen, as Metrobus and GoBus services have been suspended for the day.

MUN and CNA campuses closed their doors for the morning due to the storm.

Newfoundland Power crews have spent the night restoring power for thousands, as the storm has brought consistent high winds, with conditions expected to remain blustery until tomorrow morning.

Rob Carroll with Environment Canada says winds are expected to gust 80-100km/h throughout the day, with snowfall rates between 2-5 cm per hour.

“We are seeing the low churn its way across the Grand Banks, spreading a bunch of waves of moderate to heavy snow, and that’ll continue throughout today and even into tonight,” he told VOCM news.

“We’re looking at another good 10 to 20 cm today across the Northern Avalon, probably another 10 cm or so tonight. And then, you tack that on to what we got through the night. Looking at total amounts, it could be anywhere from 30 to 60 centimeters by the time it’s all said and done.”
