At the Buzzer: Purdue 93, Indiana 64 – Inside the Hall

Quick thoughts on a 93-64 loss at Purdue:
How it happened
Indiana fell behind immediately on Friday night at Mackey Arena as Purdue was eager to avenge its loss to the Hoosiers in Bloomington last month. IU’s inability to defend without fouling or get Lamar Wilkerson going led to a lopsided first half. Purdue shot 62.5 percent from the field in the first half and went 12-for-15 from the free throw line to build a comfortable 17-point halftime advantage. Trey Kaufman-Renn led the Boilermakers with 14 points, Braden Smith added 13 and Fletcher Loyer had 10 in a dominant opening 20 minutes. Indiana, meanwhile, got only two points from Wilkerson, turned it over seven times and managed just .91 points per possession.
Loyer hit back-to-back 3-pointers early in the second half to extend the Purdue lead to 22 points at 54-32, forcing Darian DeVries to call a timeout. By the 15:04 mark, the Boilermakers lead 60-35 on a CJ Cox layup. At the under-12 media timeout, Purdue’s lead was 68-43 and the Boilermakers were scoring 1.50 points per possession. Consecutive 3-pointers by freshman Omer Mayer gave Purdue a 75-47 lead with 10:05 left. At the under-eight media timeout, Purdue’s lead was 76-51 and the Boilermakers cruised the rest of the way to an easy victory to split the season series with the Hoosiers.
Standout performers
Wilkerson finished with 20 points, but most of his production came after the game was well out of hand. He was 7-for-13 in 34 minutes.
Statistics that stand out
Purdue scored 1.46 points per possession, which is the most the Hoosiers have allowed to an opponent this season. The Boilermakers outscored IU 13-0 on second chance points and 16-8 on points off turnovers.
Up next for IU
Indiana returns to Bloomington for a three-game home stand. The Hoosiers will host Northwestern on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET on FS1.
