It was a memorable start to the Penticton Vees’ road trip.
Winnipeg Jets star Mark Scheifele did the honours of reading aloud the Vees’ starting lineup before the expansion club’s game against the Brandon Wheat Kings on Feb. 20.
Scheifele is part-owner of the Vees, along with USA Hockey legend and former New York Rangers netminder Mike Richter. Graham Fraser is the team’s majority owner.
A first-round pick of the Jets in 2011, Scheifele, 32, was introduced in the Vees’ locker room on Friday by head coach and general manager Fred Harbinson.
The Vees (35-12-4-4) are in the midst of an extended Eastern Conference road trip.
The club’s game in Brandon on Friday, a 4-0 loss, marked the first of six games through Canada’s prairies.
Penticton visits the Regina Pats on Saturday night, Feb. 21, with a chance to set the new record for most wins in a WHL team’s first season.
The Vees need one more win to pass the 2003-2004 Everett Silvertips and set the new mark. With two more victories, Penticton would tie the 1982-1983 Longueuil Chevaliers of the QMJHL for most wins in a Canadian Hockey League franchise’s first campaign.
