Government unveils roadmap for 2026 International Women’s Day

DODOMA: THE government has unveiled a nationwide roadmap for the 2026 International Women’s Day celebrations, setting March 1–8 as a week of coordinated activities aimed at advancing women’s rights and accelerating progress towards Tanzania’s Vision 2050.

Announcing the official guidelines in Dodoma, Minister for Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups, Dorothy Gwajima, said the celebrations will be held from village to regional levels under a structured framework issued by the ministry.

This year’s theme, “Rights and Equality for Women and Girls: An Inclusive Foundation Towards Vision 2050,” underscores the government’s commitment to embedding gender equality within the country’s long-term development agenda.

Dr Gwajima said the theme aligns with key pillars of the National Development Vision 2050 and calls for inclusive participation of all social groups in promoting equal opportunities for women and girls.

“We want these celebrations to go beyond symbolism and translate into practical action that safeguards the rights of women and girls while strengthening inclusive national development,” she said.

Under the guidelines, each region will coordinate activities and publicise programmes tailored to local priorities.

The official dress code will be batik attire, with regions encouraged to source fabrics from local producers to stimulate domestic entrepreneurship, particularly among women.

The Minister noted that this year’s observance builds on the Beijing Platform for Action, which outlines 12 critical areas for advancing gender equality.

The week-long activities will feature public dialogues, conferences, exhibitions for women entrepreneurs, launch of community development projects, educational competitions, awareness sports events and awards for outstanding women achievers. Voluntary walks will mark the climax of the celebrations.

The Ministry will join Geita Region in the national commemoration, while an evaluation report on regional participation will be released on March 30, 2026.
