Flights are expected to take off as normal Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Boston Logan International Airport following a massive nor’easter that dumped over 20 inches of snow on some parts of Massachusetts – but it may depend on conditions.
On Monday, Feb. 23, FlightAware showed that nearly 1,000 flights were canceled or delayed at Logan. As of 1 p.m. that day, the airport had received 14.4 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service of Boston.
“Flights are expected to resume tomorrow but that depends on conditions,” said Samantha Decker, assistant director of media relations at the Massachusetts Port Authority. “Passengers planning to come to the airport are encouraged to check in with their airlines prior to coming.”
Across the country more than 5,600 flights were canceled on Monday, according to FlightAware. Street closures abounded as snow piled up and whiteout conditions made for “potentially life-threatening” travel conditions, the weather service said.
If your trip was affected, speed matters. Experts recommend rebooking through your airline’s app before waiting in a customer service line, since many carriers automatically load fee-free change options during major weather events. If options look limited, check nearby airports within driving or train distance, as seats sometimes open there first.
Hotels may waive same-day cancellation penalties if you call directly and reference the storm, and rental cars can often be modified in-app. Travelers should also review travel insurance policies and premium credit card benefits, which may cover meals or lodging for extended delays.
Under federal rules, airlines must provide refunds if you choose not to travel after a cancellation, regardless of ticket type. However, because weather is outside an airline’s control, compensation such as meals or hotels typically isn’t required.
