Mikaela Shiffrin sends message to terminated Washington Post journalist after Olympic run

Mikaela Shiffrin proved this week she’s got a big heart to go along with her all-world skiing talent.

The Olympic hero, who won gold in the women’s slalom competition last week, took time out of her Monday afternoon to send a sweet message to a journalist who had just been terminated from the Washington Post.

Shiffrin went to her X page, linked to one of Barry Svrluga’s columns, and then wished him well as he geared up for life after WaPo, which just ended its sports section days prior to the start of the Milan Cortina Games.

“I want to sincerely thank one of the great writers out there, @barrysvrluga, who will sadly be closing this chapter with the @washingtonpost,” Shiffrin wrote. “…you have covered the highs and lows of my career with integrity and passion. Thank you. Looking forward to following your next chapter.”

Following the Washington Post’s decision to gut its sports department, Svrluga’s last assignment for the outlet included covering Shiffrin’s Olympic run.

He spent several days documenting her time on Italian mountains, and it’s clear Shiffrin appreciated his coverage.

Svrluga ended up sending a note back to Shiffrin, writing on X, “Goodness gracious, Mikaela. Thanks so much for this, but also for your honesty over the years.

“Loved covering every minute of it!”
