A 15-year-old Calgary boy has died after being buried by an avalanche west of the city Friday afternoon, police say.

Cochrane RCMP and other emergency services responded to a call from the Nakiska ski hill around 12:45 p.m.

According to an initial RCMP report, two skiers were swept up in the avalanche and buried, but one was able to dig themselves out of the snow uninjured.

First responders eventually found the teenager unresponsive and sent to the Alberta Children’s Hospital by ground ambulance.

Cochrane RCMP confirmed in a news release he died early Saturday morning.

A Nakiska spokesperson said in a statement to CBC News, “Our hearts are with the family and friends of the individual.

“We are sending our deepest care to the family dealing with this horrible situation. In these difficult times, our entire mountain community shares in your grief and sorrow.”

The spokesperson noted that a full investigation is ongoing.

In a statement, the Alberta Alpine Ski Association confirmed two of its athletes were caught up in the avalanche.

“Our entire community is shaken by this event, and our thoughts and prayers are with the athletes, their families, teammates, and coaches during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement read.
