Watertown rolls out new emergency alert system

The city of Watertown is launching a new service to delivery emergency messages to residents.
It’s called CodeRed. It allows Watertown’s 911 Center to send emergency alerts by phone, text or email directly to residents of the city and Codington County.
That includes alerts for these like tornado warnings, gas leaks or public safety threats. City officials say the alerts are based on location, so you only get notifications for your area.
While emergency alerts are the primary purpose of CodeRED, the system will also be used for other time-sensitive notifications that may require action. Officials say this includes categories for snow removal, city services, Utilities, geo-targeted severe weather alerts and other timely categories of information. When signing up, residents choose which non-emergency alerts they want to receive.
You can sign up online or by texting “Watertown” to 36475.
