India vs West Indies, T20 World Cup 2026: India become the worst catching team in T20 World Cup 2026

West Indies put up a strong batting performance after being put into bat by India in their virtual quarterfinal of T20 World Cup 2026 in Kolkata on Sunday (March 1). The visitors didn’t have any batter going past 40 but capitalised on cameos right through the order to post a healthy score of 195 on a dry but good batting pitch at Eden Gardens.

While West Indies’ batters put on a good show, India’s fielding was a major letdown, especially the catching. As many as three catches went down with Abhishek Sharma being the main culprit with two misses. He put down a straightforward chance of Shai Hope and then dropped Rovman Powell towards the end as well.

There was also a very tough chance that was shelled by Tilak Varma who misjudged a slog from Sherfane Rutherford and also ended up conceding a six. The Hyderabad lad was a few yards in and that meant that he had to cover some ground backwards, and it was too late by then.

According to Cricbuzz, India now have 13 dropped catches in T20 World Cup 2026, the most by any team in the Super 8 stage. Their catching efficiency is barely 72 percent, again the worst for any team that has progressed to the Super 8 stage. For a largely young side, these alarming stats in fielding will be a cause for concern.

India might still chase down the target of 196, especially with dew expected. If the dew gets heavy, the chase might be comfortable. Howevewr, if the conditions do not change too much, the defending champions will be tested for sure. Regardless, India will be embarrassed at their catching levels in this T20 World Cup.
