Echavarria wins at PGA National after Lowry’s collapse

Nico Echavarria won the Cognizant Classic by two strokes on Sunday after the Bear Trap got the best of Shane Lowry.

Lowry led by three shots after a birdie on 13 capped a five-hole stretch of 5-under par. However, Lowry was unable to tame the most challenging stretch of the Jack Nicklaus-designed Champion Course at PGA National, making double-bogeys on 16 and 17 after finding water off the tee on each hole.

Lowry needed an eagle on 18 to force a playoff, but wound up making par.

Echavarria made a birdie on 17 and shot a bogey-free 66 for the second consecutive day to secure his third career PGA TOUR victory. His other wins came at the 2023 Puerto Rico Open and the 2024 Zozo Championship.

Lowry finished the tournament tied for second at 15-under with Taylor Moore and Austin Smotherman.
