Apple TV’s Most Successful Sci-Fi Venture Defies Impossible Odds on Streaming

Apple TV has become the premier home for some of the best sci-fi shows in history. Back in 2022, the streamer debuted the first season of Severance, the bonkers sci-fi show starring Adam Scott and directed by Ben Stiller. Apple TV also has other long-running sci-fi shows like Foundation and Invasion to hang its hat on, but they pale in comparison to some of the biggest shows the streamer has released in the last few years. Even Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the show connected to the massive MonsterVerse franchise, is due to return soon, but the future of the series beyond Season 2 has yet to be decided. Most of Apple TV’s sci-fi projects can’t live up to its most recent endeavor, which premiered last year and just went off the air a few weeks ago.

Apple TV’s latest sci-fi epic is Pluribus, which stars Rhea Seehorn as a woman stuck in a world overtaken by a wave of happiness. Carol (Seehorn) is one of the few who are immune to the bliss, so she takes it upon herself to not only figure out what’s causing the happiness but also put an end to it. Pluribus comes from creator Vince Gilligan, who is best known for his work writing and creating Breaking Bad and its adjacent spin-off, Better Call Saul. Although it’s been weeks since Pluribus went off the air, the show is still in the Apple TV top 10 in several countries around the world. The show earned a nearly perfect 98% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but it was more controversial among fans, earning a 67% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.

When Does ‘Pluribus’ Season 2 Come Out?

Apple TV has yet to announce when the second season of Pluribus will be released, but we do have an idea of when it will arrive. Creator Vince Gilligan recently spoke candidly during an interview that there is no chance of the show returning with a new season every year. He compared it to The Pitt, which aired its first season in 2025 and is already back for its second season. Gilligan is likely writing the second season right now, so as long as it begins production before the end of the year, a 2027 release date is most likely.

Check out the first season of Pluribus on Apple TV, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates and coverage of the second season.
