Lefkada is considered one of the most beautiful Greek islands and you can reach it from Preveza Airport

After what seems like never-ending rain, the weather has started to get a little less miserable in the North East lately. However, with jumpers and coats still needed for those out and about, anyone could be forgiven for dreaming of holidays in sunnier climes.

One destination that has opened up to North East travellers in 2026 is the Greek island of Lefkada. Connected to the country’s mainland by a 50-metre floating swing bridge (which remains in full working order, unlike our own) and a narrow causeway, it’s the only Greek island that you can get to by car.

First, holidaymakers have to get there via Preveza Airport, a three hour and 40 minute flight from Newcastle Airport, starting at a little over £100 one way. Known as one of the jewels of the Ionian sea, Lefkada sees far fewer tourists than the likes of Corfu, Kefalonia and Santorini; but those who do make it there have plenty of things to experience once they arrive.

Visit Lefkas Town

For those who are not already staying in Lefkas Town, the island capital makes for a day trip. Located on the North East coast of the island, it has a busy marina packed with shops and restaurants.

One of the attractions in the marina is the Old Wooden Bridge, a slightly curved structure which is a popular spot for photographs. Near Lefkas, you can visit Agios Ioannis Beach, the Faneromeni Monastery, and the next entry on our list.

Castle of Agia Mavra and church

The ruins of the medieval castle of Agia Mavra is one of the first sights many visitors will see before they reach the island. It sits on a peninsula between the island and the Greek mainland, and was besieged 12 times in a history dating back to the 13th century.

The tiny church of Agia Mavra is the reconstruction of an older chapel, and is better nick than much of the castle. Agia Mavra is the patron saint of Lefkada.

Sunbathe and swim at Porto Katsiki Beach

The beach at Porto Katsiki has been described as the White Cliffs of Dover but with sunshine and clear waters. It’s known as goat port, as at one point only goats could reach it.

The half-moon shaped beach can get quite busy in the high season, so if you’d prefer somewhere a little quieter consider Egremeni, Desimi or Tsoukalades Beach instead. Porto Katsiki Beach is 35km from Lefkada town, near Athani village.

Nydri Waterfalls

Located a two-hour hike from the seaside village of Nydri, the Dimossari waterfalls are one way to if not escape, at least shelter, from the summer heat. Reached along a shaded track, the path can be steep at times so anyone tackling this should wear trainers or hiking shoes.

Also take a swimming costume, as there’s a clear pool below the waterfall which you can swim in. There are stops on the way including the village of Rachi, which has a taverna.

Hike in the hills

Lefkada’s mountainous interior makes it a good destination for hiking, while the coast has dramatic clifftop paths above hidden bays. The island’s highest peak, Elati Mountain, is 1,182 metres above sea level (taller than Snowdon, but not as high as Ben Nevis) and there are a series of trails leading up the mountain.

Other highlights include the Gira Lagoon, near Lefkas Town, Mount Skaros, and the picturesque village of Exanthia.

There will be direct weekly flights between Newcastle Airport and Preveza on Wednesdays from May 27 to October 7. Passengers booking through Jet2holidays can also stay in Meganisi, Parga and Preveza Town.
