A yellow cold warning is in effect for parts of the Greater Toronto Area with wind chill temperatures expected to drop to -25 C or -30 C.
In its warning, Environment and Climate Change Canada said the cold temperatures would be taking hold overnight into the morning Monday.
“Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill,” the weather agency said. “Keep moving to maintain your body heat and seek shelter from the wind.”
Areas north of Toronto, such as Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham and Newmarket, will likely be impacted. Some cities east of Toronto, such as Oshawa and Pickering, and some west of Toronto, such as Halton Hills, Mississauga and Brampton, are also under a yellow cold warning.
Toronto will see a low of -25 C overnight and -23 C in the morning, but skies will be sunny throughout the day Monday.
In a post to social media Saturday, the City of Toronto said additional warming centres, located at Cecil Community Centre and Jimmie Simpson Recreation Centre, would open at 5 p.m. due to extreme cold temperatures.
