Gunfire strikes North York synagogue; police investigating after shots fired at Temple Emanu‑El

Toronto police are investigating after gunfire struck a North York synagogue late Monday, leaving the building damaged but causing no injuries.
Officers were first called to Temple Emanu‑El, located at 120 Old Colony Road near Bayview Avenue and Highway 401, at approximately 10:49 p.m. for reports of shots fired.
When officers arrived, they found multiple evidence markers scattered across the driveway and several bullet holes in the synagogue’s front windows. No injuries were reported.
Police confirmed they located “evidence of gunfire” and damage to the building, but said no suspect information is currently available. The hate crime unit is investigating, a police spokesperson told CityNews.
Kehillat Shaarei Torah, a second synagogue in the same neighbourhood, was briefly believed to have also been hit by gunfire, but CityNews has since confirmed that the damage there was from a previous incident in November.
“There was no firearm discharge that occurred at this location this morning or last night,” a police spokesperson said.
The building, located a short drive from Temple Emanu‑El, has been the target of repeated vandalism — at least 10 incidents in recent years, including smashed windows and antisemitic graffiti.
Police are urging anyone with information or video from the area to contact 416‑808‑3300 or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
