KU basketball coach Bill Self ejected against Arizona State

TEMPE, Ariz.
Kansas coach Bill Self was ejected from Tuesday’s game against Arizona State with his Jayhawks trailing late in the first half.
Self argued an offensive foul called on freshman guard Darryn Peterson. He argued with official Bret Smith about the call and was quickly given a first technical.
Peterson, who was 0-for-5 at the time, appeared to be held by an Arizona State player while trying to get open — and instead was whistled for an offensive foul.
After the first tech, Self continued to argue and was assessed a second technical by a different official, which caused his ejection.
“I came out of the box and he gave me a T, which is fine,” Self said of the first technical in his postgame radio interview. “But (official Doug) Sirmons, by no stretch did I do anything to deserve a second T. But that’s those guys for you.”
Kansas ultimately lost 70-60.
Self expanded on the sequence in his postgame news conference.
“Well, I argued Darryn’s foul, and I think he gets held all the time,” Self said. “Second one, I was still out of the box. So I guess that’s the reason why (Sirmons) gave it to me. … I didn’t retreat in the timely manner in which he wanted me to. But yeah, that was it. It certainly was not intentional whatsoever.”
This was Self’s second ejection as KU’s head coach, the first coming in 2024 vs. Texas Tech. Before that, Self earned an ejection while coaching Tulsa all the way back in 1998.

Self had talked about the whistle Peterson has received in recent days. He had mentioned that Peterson has to play through perceived fouls without worrying about the officiating.
“There’s a lot of holding going on off the ball that probably limits his opportunities to get good touches that the officiating is letting go right now,” Self said Monday. “I certainly hope that can change, because I don’t believe that I’ve seen very many players in my time that are good offensive players that the freedom of movement doesn’t exist in the way it does with most players.”
The Jayhawks were down 23-16 with 6:07 left in the first half when Self was ejected.
Later in the half, acting head coach Jacque Vaughn, who also stepped in to coach earlier this year when Self missed a game due to a health scare, received a technical from Randy McCall.
Self said he wasn’t sure why Vaughn drew his technical. He called the officiating crew “pretty temperamental.”
“Jacque is a relatively mild-mannered guy,” Self said. “ I’m not saying he didn’t deserve it, but I think it was a situation in which we all could have handled some situations better. But it was a pretty temperamental crew tonight.”
All three technical fouls were called by different officials.
The Sun Devils led 40-20 at halftime.
