Buckeyes Declaw Nittany Lions on the Road, 94-62, Inching Closer to Big Dance Bid

Ohio State turned the mighty lions of Mount Nittany into newborn kittens on Wednesday night.

Domination, demolition, embarrassment, declawing, pick your word. The Buckeyes (19-11, 11-8 Big Ten) led 33-11 by the under-eight media timeout after a 23-2 run, carried a 24-point lead into halftime and never let a shred of doubt enter in the second half against Penn State (12-18, 3-16) in a 94-62 victory.

Following a massive upset of then-No. 8, now-No. 15 Purdue on Sunday that placed them on the right side of the NCAA Tournament bubble, the Buckeyes move one win closer to snapping their three-year Big Dance drought.

John Mobley Jr. continued his stretch of torching nets, shooting 8-of-9 from 3-point range in a career-high 28-point performance with four assists. Bruce Thornton added 18 points and five dimes. Amare Bynum, Devin Royal and Christoph Tilly tacked on 14, 14 and 10 points to place all five Ohio State starters in double-figures for scoring.

The Buckeyes shot 66.7% from the field and 69.6% from three. Guard Freddie Dilione V provided some rare bright spots for Penn State with 15 points.

First Half

Ohio State came out with the fire of a team eager to avoid a letdown after its massive win over Purdue.

The Buckeyes hit their first three shots for a 7-0 run to start the game, although Penn State center Ivan Juric collected his first seven points during an immediate 8-0 run for the Nittany Lions that gave them the lead. Ohio State’s sloppiness didn’t help matters as the Buckeyes turned the ball over three times in the opening five minutes.

But Penn State couldn’t find anything offensively as the first half drove on. A six-minute scoring drought hit the Nittany Lions as a Thornton 3-pointer with the shot clock expiring. A Devin Royal and-one and a Mobley triple scraped together a 13-0 run for Ohio State in that span. Just like that, the Buckeyes held a 23-9 lead with less than seven minutes left in the opening period.

Thornton kept his determined offense going to maintain the lead, driving past four Penn State defenders to make a layup through contact high off the glass. Royal hit a fadeaway jumper and Amare Bynum slammed back an offensive board before a Mobley 3-pointer capped a 10-0 run that made it an incredible 33-11 margin for Ohio State. The extended run was 23-2 in total.

Mobley and Tilly tacked on two more triples to push the Buckeyes’ advantage all the way to 43-15 before the Nittany Lions strung their first set of consecutive points together since their first eight of the game, gathering a 6-0 run before a Bynum putback made it 45-21 Ohio State at half.

Penn State shot 4-of-22 (18.2%) in the first half. Mobley collected 12 points on a sizzling 4-of-5 from 3-point range as Thornton joined him in double figures with 10 first-half points.

Second Half

The lid came off the basket for Penn State coming out of the locker room, but Ohio State’s offense had answers. A 3-of-3 Nittany Lion start to the half from the field didn’t matter much as Royal hit a 3-pointer and the Buckeyes got to the free-throw line.

Bynum cashed in his own triple before Mobley casually made one from near Penn State’s mid-court logo, making him 5-of-6 to start the contest from distance and Ohio State 10-of-14 (71.4%) as a team outside the arc. The lead grew to 60-31 with less than 15 minutes to play. A high-flying Bynum fast-break dunk then pushed it past 30 points for the first time.

Mobley extended his mark to 6-of-7 from three a few possessions later. The teams traded baskets for a while, Ohio State’s lead hovering around 30 points, before Mobley’s seventh made triple in eight attempts and a Thornton floater made it a 36-point ballgame at 84-48.

The Buckeyes got Thornton some valuable rest in the final five minutes of the contest. Mobley hit one last fadeaway 3-pointer from deep on the right wing – because why not –and Ohio State coasted to a 94-62 victory.
