Tottenham’s Pedro Porro rues injuries amid ‘disaster’ season

Tottenham right-back Pedro Porro has labelled their Premier League season as “a disaster” and blames injuries and a lack of depth for their poor league form.

Spurs, who are without 10 players through injury, are without a league win in 10 matches and are 16th in the Premier League standings.

Speaking ahead of Thursday’s home game against Crystal Palace, Porro, 26, told Cadena Ser radio: “We are one point clear of the relegation zone and I don’t even know what is happening.

“Our situation in the Premier League is a disaster and that’s the reality. It’s a tough situation.

“Obviously, when you don’t have a team to compete in four competitions, it’s difficult.”

Porro missed four league games with a muscular injury before returning to play in Sunday’s 2-1 league loss at Fulham.

“You see the group of players that are injured and they could perfectly play in the Premier League games,” the Spain international said.

“It’s a starting XI that you look and say to yourself ‘wow!’ … I think that is where the issue is.”

In addition, Porro, who is in his third season at Spurs, believes there was never enough depth for his team to compete on all four fronts this season.

Spurs were eliminated in the fourth round of the League Cup by Newcastle before falling to Aston Villa in the third round of the FA Cup earlier this year.

“I believe you have to build a project to compete for everything,” Porro said. “We had the same situation last season. We did really well in the Europa League and won that competition but in the Premier League, it was more or less the same story [Spurs finished 17th last season].”

They have, however, impressed in Europe, qualifying for the last 16 of Champions League with a fourth-placed finish. Spurs have won five and lost one — a 5-3 defeat at Paris Saint-Germain — of their eight Champions League games this season heading into next week’s round of 16 first leg at Atlético Madrid.

“Obviously you look at both teams now and Atlético are favourites,” Porro said.

“But then you see how we’ve competed in the Champions League and we’ve hardly concedes goals at home. It will be two very intense games.”

Porro expects Atlético forward Antoine Griezmann to be Tottenham’s biggest threat.

In talks over a move to Orlando City per ESPN sources, the former France international has 12 goals in 38 games this season.

“Griezmann is the most important player Atlético has,” Porro said.

“He makes Atlético play a different football. People may not see that and may think he disappears during games but its his position on the pitch and how intelligent he is that makes the difference.”

Porro, meanwhile, was asked about his future amid reported interest from Real Madrid. The 26-year-old has a contract with Spurs through June 2028.

“When you’re little, you dream about many things,” Porro said.

“I’m focused on my things, my day-to-day, which is the reality. When you think about playing for the best clubs in the world, you have to do many things right for that day to come. I think I still have things to improve and then we will see.”
