David Ornstein has revealed that Tottenham offered Antoine Semenyo the most money as he was set to leave Bournemouth in January.

Semenyo was a Tottenham target, but other clubs like Liverpool and Manchester United also attempted to sign him in the winter.

However, he decided to move to Manchester City and compete for the Premier League and Champions League titles, among other top honours.

David Ornstein shares positives despite failure to sign Antoine Semenyo

Ornstein believes that the fact that ENIC were willing to pay above the odds to sign a player could be an indicator for things to come.

Historically, Tottenham have never been able to go toe to toe with other Big Six clubs in pursuit of transfer targets.

However, the Athletic journalist reveals that this time they could, and even though he was getting better wages at Spurs, he opted to move to the Etihad Stadium.

Ornstein has stated that while it is viewed as a small incremental improvement, it could make a big difference in terms of the bigger picture.

This comes after The Spurs News reported that Tottenham were willing to rip up their wage structure, and took a step towards doing it when they signed Conor Gallagher.

The reliable journalist said on the Athletic FC podcast: “It might only be small incremental improvements, but it makes a big difference.

“They didn’t manage to land Semenyo. I actually heard they made the most lucrative salary offer to him, but for whatever reason, he went to Manchester City.”

ENIC could be changing the way they do things at Tottenham

For years, Tottenham had the lowest wage bill among the Big Six clubs, and that saw them struggle on the field of play.

Due to Mauricio Pochettino and the squad he assembled, they could punch above their weight and finish in the top four consistently and they even made the Champions League final.

However, years of poor planning since the Argentine’s exit have seen Spurs fall into the messy predicament they find themselves in.

Things could be changing as they were willing to overpay for Semenyo, keen on abolishing the wage structure, and the Lewis Family Trust also injected £100m of fresh capital into the club back in October.

It is important that Spurs stay in the Premier League for ENIC to actually show they can turn things around.
