Former ESPN host draws criticism for reaction to death of Lou Holtz

A former Sportscenter anchor is being criticized for his callous response to the death of Lou Holtz.
Holtz, a legendary college football coach who led Notre Dame to a national championship, died at 89 on Wednesday. Reactions from those in the sports world were mostly respectful, with many posting tributes, memories and photos of the coaching icon.
But not Keith Olbermann, who co-hosted ESPN’s “SportsCenter” from 1992 to 1997
“Legendary scumbag, yes,” the 67-year-old wrote on X above a video of Holtz criticizing Joe Biden at the Republican National Convention in 2020.
Holtz was a vocal supporter of President Donald Trump, who awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2020.
But, like Olbermann, he was also an ESPN alum having enjoyed a second career in the spotlight when he became a college football analyst alongside Rece Davis and Mark May on “College Football Scoreboard” and “College Football Final.”
Olbermann is vocal critic of Trump, his administration and Republican policies, but his comment so soon after Holtz’s death was met with strong reactions.
Some called the comment a “new low” while others said Olbermann isn’t “half the man” that Holtz was.
In its statement, Notre Dame praised Holtz for his “enduring values of faith, family, service, and an unwavering belief in the potential of others” as well as his philanthropy.
