Bloomfield partial roof collapse: Dozens of residents displaced in NJ; 1 person injured

BLOOMFIELD, New Jersey (WABC) — A partial roof collapse at an apartment building in New Jersey has displaced dozens of residents on Friday, according to officials.
It happened at a multi-unit apartment building located at 27 Park Pl. in Bloomfield.
Officials say the collapse occurred at the northeast corner of the roof due to water damage, which impacted one apartment directly.
They say significant water leakage spread throughout multiple units, prompting an evacuation of the building.
The Bloomfield Building Department has deemed the building, which contains 27 residential units, “uninhabitable.”
Fortunately, officials say not all tenants were home at the time of the incident, and only one person suffered injuries. That person was a tenant who reported back pain while evacuating. They were taken to Mountainside Hospital for evaluation. No other injuries were reported.
The scene has since been secured by police and fire personnel, and efforts are underway to provide support for displaced residents, including temporary housing, clothing and assistance for residents with special needs.
Officials say a temporary shelter has been set up at the Bloomfield Civic Center.
“My heart goes out to every resident impacted by this incident,” said Bloomfield Mayor Jenny Mundell.”The Township has directed all available resources to the scene and I personally went to meet with residents to make sure their immediate needs were addressed.”
