Sporting KC Injury Updates, Berg Johnsen and KC Current Signings

A times, there is just so much soccer we can’t keep up. The Digital Crawl will allow us to catch up while paying homage to Digital Takiwira, the first goal scorer in Kansas City Wizards history. Not to mention it’s a bit of a ‘digital crawl’ on the bottom of the screen on ESPN and various news channels. Check out the Digital Crawl archives if you missed any stories.
Plus, it’s a nice tie in for a similar segment at the end of every episode of the For the Glory KC podcast.
Sporting KC Injury Report
Ian James is a new addition to the injury report this week. He missed practice this week according to our own Thad Bell. Zorhan Bassong was upgraded to questionable, but Wicky wouldn’t commit if he’ll be available tomorrow against San Diego FC.
Lasse Berg Johnsen Could be Available
Berg Johnsen is on his way back from Norway with his P-1 visa and may be available against San Diego FC on Saturday.
Lasse has his visa and is on way back to Kansas City. He might be available for Saturday #sportingkc

SKC II to Sporting KC Loans
Sporting KC remain shorthanded and need loans to fill out their bench. The team has loaned SKC II players Zamir Loyo Reynaga, Shane Donovan and Pierre Lurot to the first team for the San Diego game. Clubs can only do four non-hardship loans per season, and players can only play two times. ZLR and Donovan are on their third loans and Lurot is on his first. Lurot plays CB, a thin spot with Ian James out injured.
Sporting KC Have the Most GAM in MLS
MLS released General Allocation Money totals through February 20th. Sporting Kansas City top the list with over $6.3 million in GAM. The transfer window remains open until March 26th, but of course SKC can carry that money into the summer if they desire. GAM can be spent to buy down salaries and transfer fees to fit players in the salary budget, so Sporting KC have plenty of room to make additions to the roster.
David Lee indicated he wanted to sign three to six players this window and so far, has added one since making that statement; Or Blorian who will arrive in the summer.
KC Current Sign Two Players
The KC Current have signed Kyra Carusa on loan from HB Køge Women, the Chris and Angie Long owned club from Denmark. The move for the forward makes sense as Carusa was a starter in the lone preseason game we’ve seen. Her loan lasts until the summer. Carusa has scored 37 goals in 79 matches with HB Køge and helped the club to two titles in the Danish league. She’s also an Irish international.
The team also signed goalkeeper Katie Cappelletti on a short-term contract as a non-roster trainer player. The contract runs through May 31st. Cappelletti was on a short-term deal with the North Carolina Courage last season where she played with new KC Current keeper Marissa Jordan.
KC Current Most Profitable NWSL Club
Sportico put out their most recent valuations of women’s teams, and the KC Current came in at the second highest value of any NWSL club at $315 million and with the highest revenue $42.9 million. They only lagged behind Angel City FC in team values and only three WNBA teams (Golden State, New York and Indiana).
Johnny Russell Subs on for Dundee United
After rejoining his first pro team, Russell subbed on in his first game back.
United Soccer League Strike Looms
The USLPA has authorized a strike due to their inability to reach a new CBA with livable wages (among other demands). It looks like the opening weekends games will go forward with a strike planned for the next week if a deal cannot be struck.
I spoke with a player of a USL Championship club last night. There seems to be a plan by the players to play in the opening game but have some sort of league wide protest within the game. And then for match week 2, that’s when the strike would likely initiate if an agreement…
