Conners four back at Players after second-round 67

Canadian Corey Conners surged up the leaderboard Friday at The Players Championship, firing a 5-under 67 in the second round.

Conners sits four shots off leader Ludvig Aberg (12-under) at the conclusion of play on Friday. He is tied with 2021 Players champions Justin Thomas at 8-under for the tournament.

A native of Listowel, Ont., Conners started out red hot, making birdie on each of his first four holes. He carded seven birdies on the day with one eagle and four bogeys.

The highlight of Conners’ round came on the par-five ninth hole, when he holed out from the fairway from 102 yards for eagle.

Only Aberg (63), Brian Harman (64), Xander Schauffele (65), Michael Thorbjornsen (65), Keegan Bradley (66), and Cam Young (66) closed out Round 2 with a better score than Conners.

The 34-year-old Canadian heads into the weekend ranked No. 39 in the world, looking to win his third PGA Tour event. He’s made the cut in four out of five events this season, including three straight, finishing in a tie for 33rd last weekend at Bay Hill.

Conners was one of six Canadians in the field this weekend at TPC Sawgrass. Taylor Pendrith (1-under), Nick Taylor (E), and Sudarshan Yellamaraju (+1) all finished Friday’s round inside the cut line, while Mackenzie Hughes (+7) and A.J. Ewart (+9) will not see the weekend at TPC Sawgrass.
