A blizzard warning has been issued for McHenry County as forecasters warn that several inches of snow, combined with 45 mph wind gusts, will bring “treacherous conditions” to the Monday morning commute.
The National Weather Service (NWS) said a roller coaster in weather began Sunday with strong spring storms moving through the Chicagoland area.
A cold front has entered the area, leading to rain changing over to snow late Sunday.
A winter weather advisory was first issued on Sunday morning for Lake, McHenry, DeKalb, LaSalle, DuPage, Kane, Kendall and northern Cook counties.
A blizzard warning was later issued for McHenry, DeKalb, Boone, Lee, Ogle and Winnebago counties on Sunday evening.
A blizzard warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring.
“Falling and blowing snow with strong winds are likely. This will lead to whiteout conditions, making travel extremely dangerous. Do not travel. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay in your vehicle,” the warning said.
The NWS said total snow accumulations between three and fives inches and ice accumulations around a light glaze are expected in McHenry, DeKalb, Boone, Lee, Ogle and Winnebago counties.
Whiteout conditions could make travel “treacherous and potentially life-threatening.”
The advisory and warning are in effect from 10 p.m. Sunday through 1 p.m. Monday. The dangerous conditions will impact the Monday morning commute.
Winds gusting as high as 45 mph are possible, the blizzard warning said.
Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous, the winter weather advisory said. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches.
The advisory said motorists should slow down and use caution while traveling. The latest road conditions for Illinois can be found at www.gettingaroundillinois.com.
Those who go outside should watch their first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks and driveways. “These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury.”
A clipper system may deliver another round of snow Tuesday evening. Temperatures will trend warmer toward the end of the week, the NWS added.
