Report: Chiefs finalizing trade for Jets QB Justin Fields

The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing in a new backup for Patrick Mahomes.

Kansas City is finalizing a trade for New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields, according to multiple reports on Monday. The deal is pending a physical.

The Chiefs will acquire a future sixth-round pick from the Jets in exchange for a seventh-rounder as part of the deal, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported.

Fields, 27, started nine games for the Jets last season and finished with a 2-7 record. Selected by the Chicago Bears 11th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, Fields has started 53 games in his career for the Jets, Bears and Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Ohio State product could potentially be in line to start the season for Kansas City, as Mahomes will be working his way back from a season-ending knee injury he suffered on Dec. 14.

Mahomes has stated that his goal is to be ready to go for Week 1, but his timeline is still up in the air at this point.

With Fields out of the picture, Geno Smith is the clear No. 1 QB for the Jets for the upcoming season. New York traded for Smith earlier this month in a deal with the Las Vegas Raiders.

It’s a homecoming for the 35-year-old Smith, as he started his career with the Jets after the team selected him with the 39th-overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.
