Season 2 of the detective drama Ellis is coming to an end.

The popular Channel 5 series starring Sharon D Clarke and Andrew Gower as DCI Ellis and DS Harper made its comeback just last week, so fans may be surprised to learn the finale is scheduled for Wednesday, March 18, after just four episodes.

The drama, which is filmed in Northern Ireland, follows DCI Ellis and DS Harper as they crack cases across the north of England. In each episode, the pair have been joined by a string of guest stars, including DCI Banks and Wild Heart star Stephen Tompkinson, who has joined as DCI Chalmers for the last instalment.

The drama has been broadcast in two parts, with Ashenham Parts One and Two airing on Tuesday and Wednesday last week and the new case, Elmsly, airing this week.

Elmsly Part One followed Ellis and Harper to a case in a small village after university student Abi Marshall was found crushed beneath fallen scaffolding.

The case will continue into the finale, a synopsis for Elmsly Part Two reads: “Shock revelations surrounding Abi Marshall’s death send tremors through Elmsly as Ellis and Harper push further into the case.

“What began as a tragedy on a stoneworks site now casts a far darker shadow and just when the trail seems to be cooling, the discovery of a missing person breathes new urgency into the investigation.”

And now Channel 5 has confirmed what will be replacing Ellis next week in the 9pm slot on Tuesday night.

On Tuesday, March 24, Channel 5 will air Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards, a feature-length drama starring Martin Clunes, Osian Morgan, Sian Reese Williams, and Jason Hughes.

Channel 5 said: “Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards is a major, feature-length factual drama exploring the story of how a vulnerable 17-year-old boy was groomed by one of the most powerful figures in television – Huw Edwards.

“Starring Martin Clunes (Doc Martin, Wuthering Heights, Manhunt) as Edwards, the drama explores the newsreader’s double life as it spirals out of control, leading to his total exit from public life following his conviction for making indecent images of children.”

Channel 5 has said the drama paints an “unflinching portrait” of the scandal and is based on extensive factual research over the past 12 months, including exclusive first-hand interviews with those at the heart of the story.

The drama, which is only one episode long, will air for almost two hours between 9pm and 10:50pm.

Power: The Downfall of Huw Edwards airs on Tuesday, March 24 at 9pm.
