Calgary Flames forward Connor Zary left Friday’s game against Florida in the third period after Panthers’ forward A.J. Greer hit him from behind and into the boards.
The incident occurred with just under nine minutes remaining in the third when Greer shoved Zary in the numbers and sent him tumbling face-first into the boards. The 24-year-old centre stayed down and clutched at his upper-back/neck area before eventually skating off the ice and going down the tunnel under his own power accompanied by a trainer.
Greer was handed a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct for the hit. He was also called for hooking at the start of the sequence, which initially caused Zary to lose his balance. Calgary scored twice on the extended power play to give them a multi-goal lead late.
Zary had three hits in 13:20 of ice time before departing. Greer had a goal and four hits in 13:23 of action.
Zary has 11 goals and 13 assists for 24 points in 68 games so far this season, his third with Calgary.
The Flames will be back in action on Sunday at home against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
