Warrington Wolves head coach Sam Burgess believes there are more levels to Liam Byrne’s game, hinting that the prop could be pushing for England selection in the near future.
Byrne has hit the ground running at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, quickly impressing head coach and NRL legend Burgess.
Having spent his entire career at Wigan prior to the 2026 season, the 26-year-old made the off-season move to Warrington on a two-year deal.
He has started all four games for the Wire in their unbeaten campaign so far, with the team sitting third on the Super League table and recently advancing to the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup.
With Toafofoa Sipley sidelined for the next eight weeks due to a double injury, Byrne is expected to step up even further, with Burgess suggesting big honours could be in his future.
“He’s a great bloke – a good, honest man and he gets on with his job,” Burgess said of Byrne.
“He’s a big human, no-nonsense and right up my street. I love working with him, and I think he’s still got levels to go to in his game. He’s a very consistent player, and you know what you’re getting out of him every time. I think there’s a bit more in him.
“We’re only just getting started with him. He can take it to another level and keep challenging, and put his hand up for some big honours at some stage.”
When asked if he was hinting at England ahead of the Rugby League World Cup, Burgess replied: “He’s got every opportunity to push in those circles.”
Byrne has previously won seven caps for Ireland on the international stage, including during the 2022 World Cup.
