Major plans revealed for huge new fitness club in town

David Lloyd Leisure and Baylis Estates have submitted plans to build a health, fitness and racquets club at Southpoint Business Park, off the A350 in southern Chippenham.
The newly emerging business park is already home to Siemens Mobility, which is currently building a £100 million factory at the site.
If approved, the latest plans would see a huge new facility built which would boast three outdoor tennis courts within an enclosed air dome structure, three outdoor padel courts enclosed within canopies, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, an outdoor multi-use court, and an outdoor battle box exercise facility.
A spa and external spa garden, a child soft play activity area and lounge facilities, including a business hub and terrace, would also be created.
Members would have access to two sports halls and a 120 to 140 station gym, as well as four studio spaces offering different activities.

The development would be served by 277 new parking spaces and 30 covered cycle spaces.
Planning documents said the club would offer a wide range of facilities which meet the demands of all age groups.
A planning statement claims the proposed development would be a major investment in the area and would represent an annual direct economic contribution of £2.7 million.
It added that the new facility would create between 80 and 100 full time jobs, alongside a further 50 jobs during the construction phase.
The applicant believes that there is “significant support” for the facility locally, following a consultation with stakeholders in the area.
The planning statement said: “There is significant support for the proposed development.
“Respondents highlighted that the provision of a leisure use facility at the site location is needed.
“100 per cent of the respondents support David Lloyd’s proposals at Southpoint Business Park, Chippenham, and are ‘very supportive’ of enhancing the offering of sporting and leisure facilities in Chippenham.”
David Lloyd Leisure currently operates health clubs at more than 100 locations across the UK, as well as in European countries like Germany, Italy, and Spain.
It was established over 40 years ago and now has over 810,000 members, including more than 640,000 in the UK.
The planning application is currently under consideration at Wiltshire Council and a public consultation will run until April 16.
A decision is currently expected by June 17.
