A magnitude 7.6 earthquake between Tonga and Fiji in the South Pacific today did not generate a tsunami that would threaten Hawaii, officials said. The red dot on this USGS map marks the approximate epicenter of the quake.
A major earthquake in the South Pacific did not generate a tsunami that would threaten the Hawaiian islands, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
The magnitude 7.6 quake struck at 6:38 p.m. Hawaii time and was centered about 95 miles west of Neiafu, Tonga, and about 377 miles east-northeast of Labasa, Fiji, at a depth of about 147 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
“Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii, according to the PTWC in Ewa Beach.
“There is no tsunami threat because the earthquake is located too deep inside the earth,” PTWC officials said.
