Children bake handmade matzah at Chabad’s Model Matzah Bakery event

Brighton, N.Y. — Dozens of children and their families participated in a hands-on lesson in Passover traditions at the Jewish Community Center on Sunday, where they rolled up their sleeves to bake matzah.

For the 42nd year, Chabad Lubavitch presented its Passover educational experience, the Model Matzah Bakery, giving children a chance to handcraft their own matzah — the special unleavened bread Jews eat on Passover to commemorate the hasty departure from Egypt, when there was no time to bake regular leavened bread.

The bakery is modeled on an authentic Shmurah handmade matzah bakery and is designed to offer firsthand exposure to how matzah is made.

Participants baked their own matzah and witnessed the entire process.

“We’ve been doing this since 1983,” said Rabbi Nechemia Vogel. “It’s really an opportunity for kids and grown ups to really make their own matzah. The matzah that we make is for Passover but it’s a model bakery and they get the sense of what matzah is and how it’s made and why it’s made and the difference between matzah and bread. It’s a fun experience and really brings the holiday alive for people.”

Organizers said the project is designed to be a family experience, allowing parents and children to learn together while taking part in the traditional mitzvah, or observance of matzah.
