Trey Alexander made the go-ahead free throw with 4.1 seconds left as the Birmingham Squadron survived Mac McClung’s performance to beat the Windy City Bulls 134-133 on Tuesday night at the Legacy Arena at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex.
Alexander finished with 29 points and a game-high 12 assists for the Squadron, who extended their winning streak to six games. Christian Shumate posted 27 points and 11 rebounds, while Hunter Dickinson also recorded a double-double with 24 points and 16 boards. Josh Oduro added 22 points, and Johnny O’Neil contributed 18 points and 10 rebounds for Birmingham (16-19).
McClung was sensational in defeat for the Bulls (15-20), scoring a career high and franchise record 59 points to go along with 10 assists. He also became the G League’s all-time leading scorer with 5,335 points across five seasons, according to the team website. Reserve Keyshawn Bryant provided 23 points and nine rebounds, while Giorgi Bezhanishvili and Mouhamadou Gueye each scored 14 points.
A layup by Bezhanishvili put the Bulls ahead 132-129 with 13 seconds left. Alexander sank three free throws after being fouled on a 3-point attempt to tie the score with 9.3 seconds to go. On the ensuing possession, McClung was fouled and made one of two free throws to put Windy City ahead 133-132 with 6.6 seconds remaining. Alexander drew a foul with 4.1 seconds left, making both free throws to give the Squadron the victory. He followed that by blocking McClung’s potential winning jumper as time expired.
