Giants’ Luis Arraez swings the bat like Warriors’ Steph Curry shoots free throws

Luis Arraez and Steph Curry.

Both are now hanging out in the Bay Area after Arraez signed with the San Francisco Giants in free agency this offseason. Curry has spent his entire MLB career with the Golden State Warriors.

They’ve got more than that in common, though.

Curry shoots free throws at a similar rate to the amount of time that Arraez makes contact with his swings.

Baseball statistician Ryan M. Spaeder shared these figures on X on Wednesday before the Giants opened the season against the Yankees:

  • Curry: 4,628 free throw attempts, 406 misses, 91.2% free-throw percentage
  • Arraez: 6,271 swings, 473 whiffs, 92.5% contact rate

Curry’s free throw percentage is the all-time NBA record.

Arraez’s contact numbers aren’t able to be compared to bygone eras, but they’re definitely the best of this era.

It’s even more remarkable that Arraez is doing this in an age when almost every pitcher throws incredibly hard with insane movement.

It’d be like if the modern era of free throws made the shots more difficult than they used to be and Curry was still doing what he was doing.

Arraez may not be the power hitter that teams want now. But he makes contact like no one else in the game.

Maybe Curry and Arraez could compare notes sometime. They’re both special in their own ways.
