Mundo Deportivo: Modric’s decision on ‘final chapter’ remains ‘in the air’

Luka Modric has not yet made a decision regarding his future beyond the current season, according to a report from Spain.

This past weekend, Modrić made a gesture that could shape his immediate future by donating the Ballon d’Or he won with Real Madrid in 2018 to Milan’s museum, an act that has fuelled speculation about a possible extension of his stay.

No decision made

Mundo Deportivo claim that sources close to the player have told them no decision has been made or communicated to Milan. Both the club and the Croatian midfielder agreed last summer (after Real Madrid chose not to renew his contract) to keep any future plans private.

Inside the club, there is clear satisfaction with Modrić’s impact, as his performances have been outstanding. He has missed just one league match all season, appearing in 29 of Milan’s 30 Serie A fixtures for a total of 2,456 minutes.

The key question now is what Modric wants to do, given he will turn 41 next September. Initially, his goal was to remain at a high level through the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

His contract includes a one-year renewal clause that is not tied to a minimum number of appearances. Instead, any extension will depend entirely on a mutual agreement between the player and the club.

It is also worth noting that, as previously reported, Modrić significantly reduced his salary compared to his time at Real Madrid. After 13 seasons with the Spanish giants, he now earns between €2.5-3m per year, down from around €5m in his final season in Madrid, and far below the €10m he earned during the 2023–24 campaign.

The decision now rests solely with the former Tottenham man, knowing a ‘final chapter’ awaits. Should he choose to stay, he would extend his contract through to 2027, by which point he would be on the verge of turning 42.
