Inside Heathrow’s family-friendly features from soft play to free meals

Heathrow has family-friendly facilities designed to make travelling with children easier.

It has free soft-play areas, family security lanes and plenty of places to eat with kids.

The children’s play areas, called ‘Stay & Play’ zones, are in every terminal and usually open from about 6am to 9pm.

The ‘Stay & Play’ areas have slides and padded climbing frames, and are aimed at children aged 0–9.

Each zone has separate areas for babies and older children, with space to crawl, climb and play.

Family-friendly facilities at Heathrow Airport

Terminal 3 has a dedicated Family Lounge.

It includes a quiet room, a games area for older children and a space for breastfeeding.

All terminals have family security lanes, plus baby-change facilities and family toilets.

During the school holidays, the airport also runs “kids eat free” campaigns at selected cafés and restaurants.

Some airport restaurants give children free meals in school holidays, so check before you fly.

Families can also watch the planes from viewing areas in Terminals 2 and 5.

There are also lots of places to eat with child-friendly menus.

That makes it easier to move through with children.

After security, families can use the free ‘Stay & Play’ zone in the departure lounge to keep children busy.

Near gates A16 and B46, it has soft-play equipment and offers toddlers a safe place to burn off energy.

Children can watch the airfield through the floor-to-ceiling windows from the seating areas.

Terminal 3 is a good option for longer waits because it has a Family Lounge.

Just past security, the lounge has soft play for younger children and a separate games room for up to age 15.

It also has plenty of comfortable seating.

Terminal 4’s compact layout can help if you’re juggling children, buggies and hand luggage.

Terminal 4’s free ‘Stay & Play’ area is in the departure lounge after security, near gates 1–6/1A.

It also has baby-change facilities and family toilets.

Terminal 5 is often seen as the most family-friendly option for frequent flyers.

It has a spacious, free ‘Stay & Play’ area for children aged 0–9, open from 6am to 9pm.

The terminal’s large windows are also good for plane-spotting while families wait at the gate.

Extra family services: parking, Heathrow Express and hotels

Heathrow also has Mr Adventure and Little Miss Explorer-themed ‘Stay & Play’ zones.

Other family extras include family-priority parking bays, free Wi-Fi and the option to pre-order baby food or milk through the airport’s shopping service.

Children can travel free on the Heathrow Express with a paying adult, cutting the cost of getting into central London.

An on-site hotel with family rooms and covered walkways to the terminals can make early or late-night flights easier.
