Selling homemade pies for nearly 50 years, local restaurant owner dies

The woman behind the beloved Anna Mae’s Bakery and Restaurant in Millbank has passed away.

Anna Mae Wagler herself is being remembered as a compassionate businesswoman who will be greatly missed.

Her passing was announced on the restaurant’s social media channels reading, “she built something truly special even when many believed it wouldn’t succeed in a small town.”

“She was an incredibly hardworking woman, always on the go, and found her greatest joy in caring for the people around her.”

The social media post has thousands of interactions with many local businesses remembering Anna Mae fondly.

Anna Mae began selling her homemade pies at the end of her laneway back in 1978.

In 1991 the restaurant you know today started with just seven tables. The Millbank location now boasts over 50 tables, with room for nearly 200 people to enjoy traditional Mennonite cooking and baking.

Around 100 employees work at the popular location, primarily from Amish and Mennonite backgrounds.
