Jury awards $37 million to man shot by St. Louis police as teen

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) – A jury awarded $37 million to a man on Friday who was shot by St. Louis police as a teenager.

Tyron Edwards’ attorneys said on Oct. 2, 2016, he was going to meet someone to trade video games. They say two police officers started to chase the then 14-year-old and eventually shot him in the back.

A jury found Officer Thomas Streckfuss and Officer Ryan Murphy wrongfully shot Edwards and lied about the case, which led to his arrest and prosecution.

“I think that’s important to mention is that this money is a deterrence towards future harm against black children and brown children, but this money does not give Tyron Edwards the years that he lost to prison,” Edwards’ attorney Leah Fessler said. “I think when we talk about these cases, it’s important to mention that we’re trying to prevent, through punitive damages and money, these cops from killing and injuring more children and more innocent people.”

The city of St. Louis did not immediately respond to First Alert 4 for comment on the ruling or how the city will pay damages.
