49ers GM makes it clear biggest free agent won’t return

It doesn’t sound like a Jauan Jennings reunion is in the cards for the San Francisco 49ers this offseason.

Although the veteran receiver remains unsigned in free agency, 49ers general manager John Lynch effectively closed the door on San Francisco bringing back their No. 1 wideout from this past season.

“He’ll find a good home, and Jauan will go play great football for someone,” Lynch said at the NFL owners’ meeting in Phoenix this weekend. “I can’t say enough for what that guy did; when that guy stepped between the lines, man, he was a presence, and they had to deal with him, and he won us a lot of games.”

This was pretty much forecasted as soon as the 2026 league year began and confirmed when the 49ers signed Mike Evans and Christian Kirk in free agency. Jennings has been linked to several receiver-needy teams, but is still a free agent looking for a new team.

It’s unclear exactly why the 49ers and no other teams are interested in him yet, but it might have something to do with his price tag and injury history. Jennings was projected to receive a three-year, $67.84 million contract this offseason, per Spotrac, despite never eclipsing 1,000 yards in a season. His best year was 2024, where Jennings caught 77 passes for 975 yards and six touchdowns. Jennings added another nine scores in 2025.

The five-year pro hasn’t been able to play consistently, though. He’s missed at least two games in each of the past two seasons and only played in 13 games in 2024. Jennings battled through injuries throughout his time in San Francisco which, while admirably, certainly affected his ability to make players throughout the course of a game.

Jennings will more than likely sign elsewhere before the 2026 season begins. But if we take Lynch’s words for what they are, that team won’t be the 49ers.
