Meryl Streep says Anne Hathaway banned “alarmingly thin” models from ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’

Anne Hathaway is well aware of the excitement fans feel about the upcoming sequel of her cult-classic film The Devil Wears Prada – as well as of the pressure and responsibility that comes with making it – which is why she made sure to speak her mind when it came to details she found important about the film.

Speaking with Harper’s Bazaar for Hathaway’s new cover story, Meryl Streep (who plays the editor-in-chief of the prestigious fashion magazine Runway in the films) pointed out that Hathaway spoke to producers to make sure that the models featured in the sequel represented healthy and natural bodies.

She recalled the moment when she, Hathaway, and their co-stars attended fashion shows during Milan Fashion Week last year while filming. They all sat on the front row, and Streep said she was instantly “struck by how not only beautiful and young – everyone seems young to me – but alarmingly thin the models were… I thought that all had been addressed years ago. Annie clocked it too.” Streep added, “she made a beeline to the producers about it, securing promises that the models in the show that we were putting together for our film would not be so skeletal. She’s a stand-up girl.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Hathaway spoke about her own struggles with beauty, ageing, and body image, and how she has come to be happy in her body at age 43. “Some days you look in the mirror and you’re just like, ‘Not bad.’ And some days you look in the mirror and you’re like, ‘What?’” she said, “When I was expecting to see something that I am not, I felt insecure. But when I actually looked at what it actually is, I was OK with it.”
