Schools across Prince Edward Island are closed Wednesday as a mix of snow and freezing rain affects travel conditions across the province.

A yellow snowfall warning is in effect for Prince County, where 10 to 20 centimetres of snow is expected before tapering off late Wednesday morning.

“Snow may become mixed with ice pellets or freezing rain this morning over areas along the Northumberland Strait,” the warning says. “Roads and walkways will likely be difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.”

A yellow freezing rain warning is in effect for Queens and Kings counties, with the freezing rain expected to last four to eight hours and end near noon. Environment Canada warns that roads and walkways will likely become icy and slippery.

Closures

  • All provincial civil service offices across the Island are on a delayed opening until 10:30 a.m. A further update will be provided by 9:30 a.m.
  • Charlottetown City Hall and its administrative offices are on a delayed opening until 10:30 a.m. There will be a further announcement by 9:30 a.m.
  • T3 Transit says rural buses may experience delays depending on road conditions, and traffic may be moving slower than usual.
  • Simmons Sports Centre and Cody Banks Arena will have a delayed opening until 10:30 a.m., with a further announcement by 9:30 a.m.
