A B.C. Ferries vessel servicing Nanaimo and Tsawwassen won’t be sailing as originally scheduled later this week and passengers are being asked to adjust plans accordingly.
The Queen of Surrey sailings leaving Duke Point at 9 a.m. and 2 p.m and leaving Tsawwassen at 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 2 will be cancelled, a B.C. Ferries service notice stated, as will the 9 a.m. from Duke Point and the 11:30 a.m. leaving Tsawwassen on Friday, April 3.
In an e-mail, Ritinder Matthew, B.C. Ferries spokesperson, told the News Bulletin the ferry’s return to service, following regularly scheduled refit work, will be delayed “due to additional work identified as systems were brought back online.”
“We had planned for the vessel to return in time to support service on April 2, ahead of the Easter long weekend, and we know this is a frustrating time for customers. The vessel will only return once all work is complete and it’s safe to do so,” Matthew said.
The yearly refit work is “critical” in preparing ferries for tourist season, according to Matthew, who added that the work is scheduled “well in advance.”
“[It] involves extensive inspections and maintenance across key systems,” she said. “As those systems are brought back online, additional adjustments are sometimes identified before a vessel can safely return to service, particularly for an older vessel like the Queen of Surrey.”
People with reservations at those times will be contacted by B.C. Ferries’ customer service and customers who have reservations cancelled will see fees and fares refunded.
People travelling to the Lower Mainland can also consider using the Departure Bay ferry terminal in Nanaimo and the Horseshoe Bay terminal in West Vancouver as an alternative.
“We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience you may experience as a result of these cancellations,” B.C. Ferries stated in the service notice.
