Live updates: severe storms moving across central Oklahoma

Quiet conditions across Oklahoma this afternoon will give way to rapidly developing severe weather this evening.

Storms are expected to develop between 5 and 7 p.m. in western Oklahoma, with a tornado watch likely first across northern and western parts of the state.

Meteorologist David Payne says increasing moisture and cooler air to the northwest are setting the stage for severe weather. A strong jet stream will increase winds at the surface and aloft, creating favorable conditions for rotating supercells capable of producing tornadoes.

Storm trackers are positioned across Oklahoma City and Tulsa ahead of what could be a long evening of severe weather.

Threats tonight include damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes, including the potential for one or two strong tornadoes.

Future radar shows storms organizing into supercells tracking east along the I-40 corridor, moving into the Oklahoma City metro and eastern Oklahoma through the evening.

Storms could last until 2 to 3 a.m., with multiple rounds of severe weather moving west to east across the state.
