Windy and icy conditions on Mackinac Bridge, motorists warned to take caution

STRAITS OF MACKINAC, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — The Mackinac Bridge Authority is warning drivers to take caution as they say there are high winds and icy deck conditions.

Currently, there are high winds ranging from 35 to 49 mph in the Straits area. They will require an escort for certain high-profile vehicles across the Mackinac Bridge.

Examples of high-profile vehicles include:

  1. pickup trucks with campers
  2. cars with small boats, bicycles, or luggage attached to the roof
  3. ryder or U-Haul trucks
  4. any vehicle pulling a boat
  5. semi-tractors with enclosed trailers
  6. all trailers with side walls over two feet in height

The Mackinac Bridge Authority says, “High-profile vehicles must be escorted.”

They ask that motorists reduce their speed to 20 mph when approaching the bridge and be prepared to stop upon entering.

Bridge personnel will be stationed at both ends of the bridge to instruct vehicles on when and how to cross the bridge.

According to the Mackinac Bridge Authority, “All vehicles must exercise appropriate caution. The Mackinac Bridge Authority is monitoring wind speeds at various points along the structure. Additional steps will be implemented if conditions change. If you are planning to travel to the Straits area, please tune to AM radio 530 or 1610 for updates.”
