Halifax need to know for Easter Sunday and Monday

It all depends on your family whether you celebrate Easter on the Sunday or the Monday, but when it comes to what is open, there are differences.

Neither Easter Sunday nor Monday are statutory holidays in Nova Scotia, but Monday is a paid holiday for federal employees. Sunday is designated as a “retail closing day” across the province meaning shops and grocery stores will not be open.

City Services

Most city services will be closed both Sunday and Monday. The 311 contact centre will be closed Sunday but will re-open Monday.

Most municipal recreational services will be closed on both Sunday and Monday. Libraries will also be closed both days.

Easter Monday waste collection will continue as per usual.

Halifax Transit

Halifax Transit busses will be operating on a normal weekend schedule on Sunday. It will also operate on a weekday schedule on Monday.

Alderney ferry service will operate on a holiday schedule on Sunday. The first trip will depart Alderney Ferry Terminal at 7:30 a.m.

The Woodside ferry will not be in operation on Sunday. Service will resume on Monday.

Groceries and malls

Major grocery stores will be closed Sunday, as well as NSLC stores.

The Gateway Meat Market in Dartmouth will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday and the Kingswood Market in Hammons Plains will be open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

Major retailers and shopping centres, including the Halifax Shopping Centre and Mic Mac Mall, will be closed on Sunday and re-opening Monday.

Most drug stores will be open on Sunday but may have reduced hours.
